POTENTIAL PET THERAPY VOLUNTEERS

HOW DO I GET STARTED?

  1. Obtain a Social/pet Therapy program application by calling CAAA @ 602-258-3306. If you have questions, leave a message with your name and phone number requesting a return call from a pet therapy volunteer. Otherwise, leave your name, number, address, and request that a new volunteer package be sent to you.

  2. Upon receipt of the application, complete the form in its entirety. Failure to complete the application as requested will delay processing!

    1. Get your animal examined by a veterinarian
      • vaccinated in accord with standard practice and County licensing requirements
      • feces sample checked for parasites
      • suitability for pet therapy statement

    2. You must have liability insurance, which is standard on homeowners and renters policies. Have your insurance agent complete and sign the information at the bottom of the application.

    3. All volunteers must belong to the Companion Animal Association of Arizona. Complete the membership application and write a check for your annual membership dues.

Note: Annual updates including evidence of insurance and veterinary exam, and renewal of membership in CAAA is required to volunteer under the auspices of CAAA.

  3. Return the completed pet therapy application, membership application, membership dues and required pet photos per the instructions sent to you with the new volunteer package.

  4. You will be contacted by another volunteer to set-up an observation. During the observation, you accompany an experienced pet therapy team on a visit in order to learn techniques for facilitating interaction with pets and people with impairments.

  5. After the observation, you will by contacted by the volunteer who will do your evaluation, i.e., your first visit with your animal. Prior to your first visit (and all visits) you bathe, groom and clip the nails of your pet. During the visit your evaluator will assist you and your animal in getting the most out of your visiting experiences with CAAA. She will be closely watching your companion animal to be sure your dog or cat can adapt to the stresses of a care facility environment and give you some suggestions for helping the process along.

Upon completion of the evaluation and certification as a CAAA pet therapy team, you will receive an identification card that authorizes your visits to those facilities signed up for pet therapy with CAAA. You will be placed at one or more of these facilities, be given the name and number of the contact person and asked to call her to schedule your own visits thereafter.
Volunteers must commit to visit their assigned facility a minimum of one time per month for a one-year period to be considered for the program.
