About our pet therapy program

Interested in our pet therapy program? Fantastic! To make sure that you and your pet are a perfect match for what we do, please read through the basics below, and if you are still interested, visit our "Step-By-Step Guide" to get started!
  • CAAA volunteers and their certified pets (usually dogs) visit assigned host facilities at a regularly scheduled time.
  • Host facilities (which must have a service agreement with CAAA) are usually large skilled nursing, assistant living or healthcare centers housing adults—most often senior citizens. CAAA volunteers do not visit private homes or group homes, or facilities serving children.
  • Visits usually occur monthly, bi-weekly or weekly between 9:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.  Pets must undergo annual health screening and are subject to re-testing to CAAA standards, as needed.
  • CAAA pet certification does not permit pet owners to claim the rights of a service animal.

While this type of volunteer work can be rewarding, it also can be emotionally difficult and requires a commitment of time on a regular basis. Not all well-behaved, happy pets are suited for this type of close interaction with strangers in unfamiliar environments filled with unusual odors, noises, and equipment.

We not only need to be confident of your future success but also we want to give you sufficient opportunity to be sure that our program is the right match for you and your pet.
